The number of bowhead whales, Balaena mysticetus , passing within viewing range of the ice-based census at Point Barrow, Alaska, during spring migrations from 1978 to 1988 is estimated from the visual census data. The trend in the annual numbers yields an estimated rate of increase of 3.1% per year with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 0.1% to 6.2% for the Bering-Chukchi-Beaufort Seas bowhead stock during this period. Alternative treatments of the data suggest less precise or somewhat lower estimates, but all results indicate that the stock was increasing. 相似文献

In a host–parasitoid system comprising mycophagous drosophilids and their parasitoids, the drosophilid and parasitoid species assemblages, host use, and the prevalence of parasitism were assessed, and the “disproportionate parasitism hypothesis” was examined with consideration given to yearly variations. The mycophagous drosophilids, their fungal food resources and parasitoids were studied by carrying out an intensive census throughout the activity seasons of 4 years (2000–2003) in Hokkaido, northern Japan. Five hymenopterous parasitoid species, four braconids and one eucoilid, were found. Parasitoids of mycophagous drosophilids are reported for the first time from Asia. Most parasitism (99.2%) was by braconids, in contrast to the dominance of eucoilids in Europe. Parasitism was restricted to the summer, and the rate was high from early July to early August every year. There was considerable yearly variation in the composition of abundant fungus, drosophilid and parasitoid species, especially between 2000 and 2001. The alternation of dominant host species was coupled with the alternation of dominant parasitoid species that differed in host use. Despite the yearly variation in the system, the most dominant host species suffered disproportionately heavy parasitism by the correspondingly dominant parasitoid species every year. The parasitism rate was positively correlated with the relative host abundance. This thus indicates that the disproportionate parasitism mechanism may operate, via which species coexistence is promoted by a higher rate of parasitism of the dominant species. 相似文献

A recent increase in published studies of lianas has been paralleled by a proliferation of protocols for censusing lianas. This article seeks to increase uniformity in liana inventories by providing specific recommendations for the determination of which taxa to include, the location of diameter measurement points on individual stems, the setting of minimum stem diameter cutoffs, the treatment of multiple‐stemmed and rooted clonal groups, and the measurement of noncylindrical stems. Use of more uniform liana censusing protocols may facilitate comparison of independently collected data sets and further our understanding of global patterns in liana abundance, diversity, biomass, and dynamics. 相似文献

Résumé Avoir conscience de l'abondance des grands carnivores est très important pour la gestion de leur conservation. Cependant, l'évaluation directe des nombres de carnivores est souvent difficile, nècessitant beaucoup d'argent et de temps, ce qui importe que l'échantillonnage indirect est une alternative fiable et valable. Les techniques de recensement à distance se sont montrèes économiques, renouvelables, et objectives. Nous avons donc estimé le nombre de grands carnivores de six espèces dans une superficie assez petite au nord de l'Afrique du Sud, en comparant trois méthodes d'échantillonnage basèes sur des décomptes des traces et mesures: (i) une approche qualitative, où les individus furent identifiés de manière subjective en étudiant les différences dans les mesures des traces; (ii) une approche quantitative qui se sert de la forte corrélation linéaire de la densité des traces à la densité des carnivores démontrée dans d'autres études; et (iii) une approche quantitative qui impliquent des analyses répétées de la variance et des post-enquêtes sur les mesures des traces afin de disposer des données statistiques pour identifier les différences entre des services des traces. Les trois méthodes fournirent des résultats comparables qui semblent raisonnables et qui peuvent être une bonne indication du vrai nombre de grands carnivores dans la zone de l'étude. Les rèsultats étayent la fiabilité des estimations indirectes de l'abondance de grands carnivores basés sur les données des traces, et sont prometteurs pour des futures recherches et pour la conservation de ces animaux. 相似文献

A series of four transect or strip censuses of primates was carried out in a forest in eastern Colombia where the absolute
density of the three diurnal species had been previously calculated during long-term studies. The diurnal species were Alouatta seniculus, Callicebus torquatus,and Cebus apella.Techniques were identical, except for a few variables tested for their effect on the experimental results;these included three different types of detection distances. Variable results were obtained for the two species having the
smallest home ranges (A. seniculusand C. torquatus)with the most consistently accurate densities being calculated using the drop in the frequency distribution of sighting distances
as a measure of the detection distance. Grossly inflated results were obtained for almost all calculations of C. apelladensity. The stimulus leading to the detection of particular primate groups was usually their vocalizations. Counts of recognized
group members were inaccurate and short of the actual number of individuals in each group. Problems of censusing primates

Estimates of reef fish densities made by divers visually censusing 5 m wide strip transects were compared with capture-resight estimates calculated independently using data on the resighting frequencies of fish marked with colour-coded tags. The difference in density estimates between methods varied between species but with patterns consistent at the three eastern Tasmanian sites studied. Densities of the two most abundant species, the wrasses Notolabrus tetricus and Notolabrus fucicola, showed good agreement between methods. By contrast, populations of the two monacanthids Meuschenia australis and Meuschenia freycineti were underestimated by an order of magnitude in strip transects relative to capture-resight, while populations of the open-water latrid Latridopsis forsteri were overestimated.For all common fish species observed in strip transects, variation in density estimates between divers was extremely low compared to variation between sites and between months. Variation in density estimates between different days within a week and between 50 m blocks located 50 m apart was also negligible; however, residual error associated with variation by a single diver within a block and day was high. Biases associated with changing detectability of fishes in open versus densely vegetated habitats were assessed by algal removal experiments, and were found to be negligible or non-significantly low for five of the six species examined. The exceptional species—N. tetricus—exhibited a 70% rise in fish sighted by diver following algal clearance despite trapping data indicating no increase in fish numbers.Diver estimates of fish length were on average 7% greater than measured lengths. Divers possessed a clear tendency to make increasingly inaccurate size estimates as fish length deviated in either direction from 300 mm. Lengths of 175-mm animals were underestimated by ≈20% and 400-mm fishes were overestimated by ≈10%. These changes in diver bias with fish size were largely independent of fish species, site and diver. The precision of size estimates, as indicated by the standard deviation of bias, also varied with fish size, with values varying from ≈13% at 200 mm fish length to ≈8% at 400 mm length. The decline in precision at small body size largely reflected size intervals used by divers to bin data.
